Meet the Deans | School of Economics and Management
Editor's note:
In this feature, we continue our exploration of Tsinghua University's diverse academic landscape through the “Meet the Deans” series. From cutting-edge research to global collaborations and visionary leadership, each department at Tsinghua offers a unique perspective on education and innovation.
Today, let's join Professor Bai Chong-En, the Dean of the School of Economics and Management, to explore the dynamic world of business and economics at Tsinghua.
Founded in 1984, the School of Economics and Management (SEM) at Tsinghua University is a beacon of academic rigor and leadership in the fields of economics and management. Over the past 40 years, SEM has cultivated a reputation for producing leaders who make significant contributions both in China and globally.
Academic Prowess
Ranked among the top business schools in the world, SEM offers a comprehensive range of programs, from undergraduate degrees to PhDs, as well as specialized non-degree programs for business executives. The Global MBA program, Master of Finance, and Executive MBA are just a few of the programs that have consistently ranked highly in international evaluations such as the Financial Times and QS rankings.
SEM’s curriculum is designed to foster innovation, critical thinking, and a global outlook, preparing students to navigate and lead in the ever-evolving global business landscape.
Global Engagement
SEM’s international reach is impressive, with over 100 partnerships with leading universities worldwide. The School was the first in the Chinese Mainland to receive AACSB accreditation, a testament to its commitment to excellence. Students benefit from an extensive network of exchange programs and dual degree options with prestigious institutions like Columbia University, MIT, and London Business School, providing unparalleled opportunities for global learning and collaboration.
Innovative Research and Faculty
The faculty at SEM are not only distinguished educators but also active contributors to the global academic and business communities. With about 140 faculty members across seven departments, many are involved in cutting-edge research, serving on editorial boards of top journals, and advising on major policy initiatives, including China’s five-year plans.
SEM is also home to the x-lab, a unique initiative that brings together 16 schools and departments to foster creativity, innovation, and entrepreneurship. Here, students collaborate with peers from diverse disciplines to bring groundbreaking ideas to life.
Student Life and Opportunities
At SEM, education extends beyond the classroom. The School’s strong industry connections allow students to gain firsthand experience through internships, company visits, and real-world projects with leading firms like Baidu and ByteDance. The Career Development Center offers robust support, guiding students to successful careers in finance, technology, public sectors, and academia.
Students at SEM also enjoy a vibrant campus life, participating in events like the Dong Qing Festival and excelling in sports at national and international levels, including the Olympics. The School fosters a balanced environment where academic pursuits and extracurricular activities thrive together.
Prof Bai Chong-En warmly invites you to join the SEM community: “I hope that we are a bridge to bring together different disciplines, technology and business, theory and practice, as well as to foster deeper connections between China and the world. We hope that you'll join us on this journey. ”
